State Victim Compensation Program Changes Name
Sacramento, CA — The Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board is now the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB), effective July 1.
The new name is a result of Senate Bill 836, which transfers the Government Claims Program and other functions to the Department of General Services. The bill was signed on June 27, 2016 by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.
“Our new name reflects our focused responsibilities,” said CalVCB Executive Officer, Julie Nauman. “Our mission and vision remain the same. We are committed to leading the way in victim services and providing financial assistance to victims of violent crime.”
CalVCB will direct the state’s Victim Compensation Program, the Good Samaritan Program, claims for Erroneously Convicted Persons (PC 4900) and the Missing Children Reward Program.The current email addresses and URL will continue to work for a period of time and users will be redirected to the new links as they become available. The new website address will change to www.victims.ca.gov and employee email addresses will become @victims.ca.gov.
The California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) provides compensation for victims of violent crime who are injured or threatened with injury. Among the crimes covered are domestic violence, child abuse, sexual and physical assault, homicide, robbery, and vehicular manslaughter. Last fiscal year, the program received nearly 50,000 applications and provided over $51 million in compensation to crime victims.
If a person meets eligibility criteria, CalVCB will compensate many types of services when the costs are not covered by other sources. Eligible expenses include medical and dental care, mental health services, income loss, funeral expenses, rehabilitation and relocation. Funding for CalVCB comes from restitution fines and orders, penalty assessments levied on persons convicted of crimes, traffic offenses and federal funds.
