Sacramento, CA —The California Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board (VCGCB) Executive Officer Julie Nauman applauds the VCGCB Public Affairs Team for taking home three State Information Officers Council (SiOC) Awards. As the theme — Recognizing Excellence in State Government Communications — suggests, the annual awards acknowledge the pioneering professionals in California government communications.

Every year respectable public and private professionals in journalism, photography, and media relations serve as judges and are charged with identifying the most honorable works and the professionals behind them. This year there were nearly 30 different categories varying from Best Press Release to Best Event. The 2012 SiOC Award competition categories included Writing, Reports, Publications, Audio-Visual Production, Graphics, Special Projects, Media Relations, Internet Communications, and Best Bang for Your Buck.

The VCGCB Public Affairs Team submitted nominations into three categories: Internet Communications - Internet Outreach | Blog, Internet Communications - Social Media and Internet Communications - Agency Website. The team was honored with the Gold for the CalVCP Connection Blog and for Social Media. The team was also awarded an Honorable Mention for Agency Website.

"I have known for years that our Public Affairs Team does excellent work, and I am pleased to know their superior performance is being recognized among the top professionals in the industry," said Julie Nauman. "These awards further demonstrate how the team continues to move the Board forward in communications as they continue to break new ground."

The California Victim Compensation Program (CalVCP) provides compensation for victims of violent crime who are injured or threatened with injury. Among the crimes covered are domestic violence, child abuse, sexual and physical assault, homicide, robbery, drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.

If a person meets eligibility criteria, CalVCP will compensate many types of services when the costs are not covered by other sources.

Eligible services include medical and dental care, mental health services, income loss, funeral expenses, rehabilitation and relocation. Funding for CalVCP comes from restitution fines and orders, penalty assessments levied on persons convicted of crimes and traffic offenses, and federal matching funds.
